ORMISTON GORGE CAMPGROUND

Public BBQ

The campground at Ormiston Gorge in the West MacDonnells, and the location is superb - walking distance to the gorge itself, to the waterhole and to the cafe, with a great choice of walks and lookouts leading off in every direction. The waterhole swims well, though it is rocky in places. Booking ahead is essential. There are no powered sites and no dump station, and you take your own rubbish out. The sites are small and very close together, hard work with a large caravan and sloping in places - lower-numbered bays are easier. The amenities are the weak point: two toilets and one shower per gender, hot water but weak flow, and cleanliness that swings from adequate to genuinely poor. Come for the gorge and the walks and treat the camping as a means to an end.
